Major producers partner with EDSI to develop applications that enhance production and reduce costs. Here are a few examples of how our expertise has impacted wells across Western Canada.
Deep Basin Gas Wells
EDSI has been developing invert applications in this area since 2004. We evolved our current mud system over the next two years and now provide 100% of the invert fluid and 50% of the well site service for a major operator. The fluid is custom blended in our colloid mill to the operator’s exact specifications. Since partnering with EDSI the company has reduced fluid maintenance costs by more than 75% - from an average of $70.00 per meter drilled to below $15.00 per meter drilled. EDSI has also helped to reduce average time on wells from over 40 days in 2004 to 16.7 days in 2008, while average depths have increased from 3272 meters to 3581 meters.
Deep Gas Drilling
EDSI was invited to participate in several wells drilling for deep gas. The mandate of the operator was to reduce fluid maintenance costs and increase R.O.P.’s as much as possible. The first well was drilled to a final T.D. of over 6,700 meters and came in ahead of schedule and under budget. We have successfully completed two more wells in the same area. In conjunction with Weatherford UBD we have increased the rate of penetration in the Nikinassin formation from ~ 2 m/hr to ~ 12 m/hr. Every subsequent well has been drilled faster and at a reduced cost.
Central Alberta / Northeastern B.C. Water base
K-Lite was developed to get better inhibition with similar disposal costs to advanced gel systems. K-Lite utilizes a small amount of potassium sulphate along with a proprietary inhibitive polymer to provide excellent inhibition. The result – more than 30 wells have shown close to gauge caliper logs. The low solids content and low M.B.T. results in a high R.O.P. fluid with low susceptibility to contaminants such as anhydrite and drill solids. Overall costs to producers have reduced significantly compared to other inhibitive systems, while production increased markedly.
